The home as an extension of style

Carolina Collaer · 28/01/2026

There are beautiful homes that say nothing. Decorating well isn’t filling a home, but knowing what deserves to stay, and recognising yourself in it.

There are beautiful homes that say nothing.

And there are others that, without needing to be perfect, immediately tell you who lives in them.

For me, that is where real style begins.

Not in having a home full of extraordinary objects, but in knowing why something deserves to come into it.

For a long time we have understood decorating as a sum of aesthetic decisions.

The right sofa.

The right lamp.

The right colour.

The table that “matches”.

But a home with personality is not built simply by making everything match.

It is built by choosing.

An object found on a trip.

A piece of art that leaves no one indifferent.

An imperfect ceramic.

An extraordinary chair.

A book we keep opening.

A table that ages with us.

It is those decisions that end up building a home that feels your own.

I’m far more interested in a room where one piece has character than in a space perfectly decorated but completely predictable.

Because good taste is not about erasing personality.

Quite the opposite.

A home can be sophisticated and have colour.

It can be minimalist and hold powerful objects.

It can mix eras, materials and origins.

It can place a contemporary work beside an inherited piece and still be entirely coherent.

Coherence is not always in the objects.

It is in the eye of the one who chose them.

I also believe we live in an age when we accumulate too much.

We buy décor the way we buy clothes: because something is in fashion, because we see it everywhere, because we feel a space still “needs something”.

And perhaps, very often, it needs exactly the opposite.

Space.

Visual silence.

Time to discover what we really want to keep.

At CARO I’m interested in a home built little by little.

A home where not everything is immediately replaceable.

Where design can live with craft, art with everyday objects, the new with what has kept us company for years.

I don’t want to recommend objects only because they are beautiful.

I want to ask whether they add something.

Whether they have presence.

Whether they spark a conversation.

Whether we can imagine still looking at them ten years from now.

Because our home is also part of our image.

Not in the sense of showing it to others.

In the far more intimate sense of recognising ourselves in it.

When we close the door, everything we have chosen remains.

And perhaps that is why decorating well is not about filling a home.

It is about knowing what deserves to stay.

Your home speaks about you too. Make sure it has something interesting to say.
